Featured Success Story

I’ve struggled with my weight all of my adult life.  Although I’ve been athletic as a student, I never kept up with a healthy lifestyle.  I’ve tried several diets but always regained the weight.  I even joined health clubs, but buried myself in my work making excuses not to find time to exercise.  My eating habits were all wrong.  I skipped breakfast and frequented my local coffee shops to satisfy my need to be energized.  I found myself eating dinner later in the evening and drinking wine to wind down at night.  I was shocked when I finally stepped on the scale.  I noticed that I began to snore at night and feel tired the next morning.  My cholesterol and triglyceride levels were borderline high.  I decided that I needed to do something, so again dieted on my own and increased my physical activities, but then fell of my own track and went right back into my old habits.

I have a good friend on the West Coast who found success with a personal training.  I worried about the expense of using a personal trainer, but I decided that I wanted the good health that my friend was finding.  I searched the internet and liked the website for Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. so requested a consultation.  Kevin called me the next day and I was impressed with his philosophy and how the slow, repetitive exercises would help me reach my goals.  I’m 43 and really want to be fit in my later 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, so that I can enjoy physical activities and health during these years.  Of course, weight loss was important, but building my strength was equally important.

AFFL offered everything I asked…..accountability, flexibility (because of my hours), privacy, and understanding of my current physical limitations with my weight, age and injury history.  Using both fitday.com and the one-on-one appointments help me to be accountable.  I’ve so appreciated the body composition testing and helping to focus on the goals I’ve made.  Really, AFFL is very affordable especially that I keep my appointments and don’t make excuses not to use my membership.

I joined AFFL on November 9, 2009.  I wasn’t pleased with my body composition numbers, but remember telling Kevin that knowledge is power.  Boy is that the truth!  Kevin helped me to make goals in my diet, setting a caloric goal each day, and helped me to set both short and long term goals.  Since then, I’ve kept up with my food diary with fitday.com, and try to come to personal training sessions once or twice a week and one cardio work out a week.  I noticed a change in my waistline right away and then with my strength.  I began my fitness training at 186 pounds on November 9, 2009.  I finished the year making my short term goal of 166 pounds.  I’ve have a long way to go, but seeing results right away is motivating me to keep going.  Kevin, Tori and Greg have all been great to encourage me and reviewing my exercise and eating habits.  I don’t consider myself on a diet, but rather feel that I’ve found the right way to eat.  I know I haven’t figured it all out yet, but have great guidelines eating about five times a day and staying hydrated.  I look forward to weighing in every week and have kept a positive outlook.

AFFL has kept its end of the deal by providing accountability, flexibility, personal attention to my needs and goals, privacy, and professionalism.   I love the slow, isolated exercises.  I have never felt that I was at risk of being hurt on any of the machines, and I love that I can see my progress with both weights and length of time for each exercise.  I am so much more energetic and feel like I can accomplish so much more at home and work.  I am sleeping so well and have stopped snoring.  I can’t wait to go to my internist next month and have my cholesterol and triglyceride levels drawn.  I never thought I’d say this, but I really feel younger.  I love that I am wearing smaller sizes, but really so pleased that I am getting stronger and feeling so much better.   AFFL has changed my life and I now know that I can live the active lifestyle that I had hoped for.  I can’t wait to make my goals, but think I’ll continue with AFFL so that I continue to be accountable and focus on a healthy lifestyle.

AFFL Personal Training Testimonials

I had spinal fusion in my lumbar region (L4-L5) on July 9, 2008.  It took me a year after the surgery to heal properly.  I decided to seek a physical therapist, and found Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. online.  While sitting in the lobby, I picked up a brochure with testimonials on the back, and immediately recognized the first person, Peter Prodoehl.  I called Pete the next day asking him about AFFL, and he told me that there are only two words he can think of, Life Changing.

I started working with AFFL on August 13, 2009 and now have been going there for 12 weeks, either once or twice a week.  In that time, I have lost over 20 pounds, and still going. In addition, my doctor has encouraged me to continue doing whatever I have been doing, as my blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride numbers are far better than they have been for many years. My endurance is up, and most importantly my lower back is strengthening, which for me has been a constant, painful reminder of my surgery 15 months ago. The pain is gone, and my back is much better now.  The slow-motion weight training regimen that Kevin and his staff have me on is definitely working, and the cardio workout adds a positive element of additional exercise after each weight training session.

Through my association with AFFL, I also have met with a registered dietician, something I have never done in my life (54 years).  Franco Giardina has helped me understand how many calories my body burns at rest (resting metabolic rate), and that has become the basis from which we have structured my diet.  This, in combination with the activities at AFFL, has put me on a new course in my life.

The AFFL staff is very professional, focussed and competitive.  They want for you to succeed.  For the first time, I now understand what my body is telling me, thanks to the knowledge and experience of all involved at AFFL.  I would be happy to speak with anybody interested in working with AFFL in order to share my most positive experience in working with them.  Although still a work in process, I now understand what Peter Prodoehl told me 12 weeks ago when he used the words Life Changing.  I agree with him, and give my highest recommendation to anyone interested in working with Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc.

  “I lost over 180 pounds!”

On January 31, 2004, I had my last supper of deep-dish pizza. The next day was the day I started eating differently for the rest of my life. I saw some significant weight melt off over the first few months, but I wanted more. I knew I had to get active so I took up disc golf and playing tennis.

As the weight continued to come off, I began researching fitness programs and weight-training options. I had always been interested in weight training. However, the last thing I wanted to do was go into the gym without a plan, get hurt and potentially stall my weight loss. I had to be especially careful due to a tender back and numerous foot and knee problems all thanks a lifetime of being overweight.

In April, I discovered Kevin and Appleton Fitness For Life, Inc. Kevin’s methodology of working out once or twice a week at a super slow pace was very intriguing to me. I spoke to Kevin over the phone and based on his knowledge and enthusiasm, I scheduled my first session. I came to AFFL twice a week for the next year and continued with my other activities and new eating habits. I ended up losing a total of 180 lbs in just less than two years!

I exceeded my goal weight about 3 times. Of course, EVERYONE says the hard part is keeping it off. The thought of maintaining a weight terrified me. I think that is why I kept adjusting my goal weight. I was afraid to stop losing weight and afraid my accomplishments would allow temptation to creep in.

That is when Kevin and I kicked it into high gear. Kevin changes up my workout frequently. He doesn’t allow me to get bored or my body to get “used to” a routine. Kevin has performed body composition tests so that I can see my body fat to muscle ratio. As a numbers guy and goal-oriented person, this just adds to my motivation.

In my opinion, the MedX equipment at AFFL is simply the most effective, safest, and efficient way to build muscle and lose fat. No other gym even comes close.

It is September of 2008, and I am still hovering around my 180 lb weight-loss. Most of my efforts these days go towards building muscle. I am enjoying life and learning more and more about health. My foot and knee problems have completely vanished and my back is stronger than ever. I have even been able to supplement my AFFL workouts at my own gym by applying the knowledge gained from Kevin. I am so thankful I found Kevin. He has played a very important role in my life. When people ask how I did it, I always say I changed the way I eat and I weight trained at AFFL.

In August 2006, I knew I needed to make some changes in my life. I crossed the threshold of being in my “thirties,” and staying physically fit no longer came naturally. That’s when I found Kevin, and he’s been instilling a great fitness regiment into my lifestyle since. In the last couple of years, I’ve lost 18 pounds, and 6% body fat. Results were immediate and dramatic, but most importantly, Kevin has helped me maintain my physique. This journey has been much more rewarding then going to your run-of-the mill workout club. Kevin is encouraging, always there to bounce ideas off of, and even had some good tips as to how I should propose to my fiancée’! Now that’s an all-service fitness center!

Finding Kevin as a personal trainer was a miracle! The slow-speed training program has helped me increase muscle, burn fat, lose weight, make healthy eating choices, and mostly importantly-given me the tools to make positive changes towards the rest of my life. Kevin’s personal involvement, genuine personality, support, and in depth knowledge of fitness and nutrition has made my experience an extraordinary one. Unlike other programs I’ve tried and found unsuccessful, training with Kevin makes the commitment of getting/staying in shape enjoyable while achieving goals!

To Everyone Interested in Physical Well Being:

I started the CORE Training program with AFFL in December of 2007. At 61 years old, 242 pounds, and not having participated in any consistent exercise program for about 25 years I thought it would be a good idea to give it a try. The results were almost instant with increased mobility and strength immediately noticeable, and within three months I weighed 232 pounds. I’m confident more weight loss would have occurred if I would have been more vigilant with diet issues, for which Kevin also gave excellent advice. I have encouraged friends to give this program a try, some of them have, and they also report progress on their feeling of overall physical well being. I highly recommend the AFFL training regiment regardless of age, gender, or current physical condition. I know of no other facility in the Fox Valley offering CORE training with the abundance of advanced equipment all in one spot. Each machine is designed to tax a specific group of muscles and Kevin monitors each session “One-on-one”, keeping the 30 minute sessions extremely beneficial. “Good health is the greatest wealth”

I have been with AFFL for a couple of months now, but I am already very pleased with the results!! I am getting stronger every week, my muscle tone and posture have improved, and I feel great. I knew I had to try something different because trying to eat right and using my elliptical machine at home were not giving me the results I wanted. The Personal Training Sessions with Kevin provide me with a great variety of exercises using all my muscle groups. The personal attention ensures that I am doing the exercises safely and correctly. Kevin is so encouraging, I am doing more than I ever thought possible. I have a very busy schedule with my kids and my job, so the ability to get the results I am getting, with only 30-60 minutes of exercise per week is worth every penny!!

For several years bowling, golfing, and repeated lifting at home or work would trigger low back and sciatic pain. After many unsuccessful attempts at treatment, I finally tried a spine-strengthening program at AFFL. It has been very effective and it only takes 30-minutes a week! Now I rarely have discomfort and when I do, it is much less painful and subsides much faster. I recommend AFFL to anyone in need of spine or total body conditioning.

About 3 years ago I was looking for a program to help me strengthen my upper body. It was at that time that I read about the benefits of the slow-speed workout and that I saw an article in the Appleton paper about AFFL. I have been working out at AFFL ever since. Though I really did not need to lose weight, I have noticed a definite change in my upper body and leg strength. It has helped a lot with my biking and kayaking. Recently I did a bike ride that was 80 miles, two days in a row, with no problem. I like the one-on-one supervision, having an appointment, and being done in 30 minutes. I am now looking forward to trying the new interval (Sci-Fit) equipment that AFFL has added. I am sure it will help me prepare for a trek next September to Machu Piccu which will go up to 15,000 feet. Thanks AFFL for helping me reach my goals at age 50!!

I started at AFFL about 2-1/2 years ago in order to improve my golf game. I started twice per week, but at about eight months I reduced to once per week and I have continued at that pace. After about 4-5 months I noticed improved stamina, not tired at the end of 9 holes of golf!! After about one year, I noticed I was hitting my drives longer and that has continued to improve to this day.I feel good at 68 years old. As I observe and golf with others my age, I feel that I am in better shape than most of them. My chronic lower back pain has decreased significantly. I especially like the privacy, encouragement and the one-on-one setting at AFFL. Kevin is fun to work with!!

After a lifetime of chiropractor, physical therapy, acupuncture and anti-inflammatories for lower back pain, I’m finished treating the symptoms. Kevin taught me the key is to build and restore muscle in the back and legs to help prevent the problem of lower back and hip pain. In 30-minutes per week, utilizing the best equipment available at AFFL, I can prevent lower back pain far cheaper than treating it. Thanks Kevin and AFFL!!

I have strength trained off and on for most of my life, always giving up because of some injury. I have tried most of the facilities in the area. The equipment was not always user friendly and sometimes not in good repair. The staff was not always available when I needed help &/or not always real knowledgeable. I heard about AFFL and decided to give it a try, after all, what did I have to lose? My intent was to train for a few months to learn proper form, and then go out on my own and try again at another local facility. One and a half years later, I’m still at AFFL. The reason for this is because of the superior workout equipment, the private one-on-one setting, with coaching to always improve my workouts and to do my very best. With the slow speed workout and Kevin’s excellent knowledge of coaching, I have remained injury free, improved endurance and have gained more overall strength in my 1-1/2 years at AFFL, then I have in any of my long term, previous attempts, working out at the other local facilities. The results you will receive from AFFL are worth the investment for your future health.

I have exercised my whole life. As I have gotten older the routine I used to do was taking a toll on my back and joints. I started to accept this as part of the aging process and began to reduce my exercise routine. Along with that, I became weaker, less agile and began to gain weight. I was approached by Kevin from AFFL, with a program that would enhance the way that I like to exercise. His slow speed workout added a new dimension to my workouts and gave my back and my joints the positive improvement needed to continue with my old routine. I can lift more weight now, than I did ten years ago and I’m 47 years old!! I am an avid hunter and outdoorsman. I can climb trees and mountains without the pain I used to endure. Kevin’s workout builds a strong base that helps support whatever you do. I have been with Kevin since the day he opened and AFFL has become a great routine in my life!!

Not too long ago, my arthritis, back and neck problems had gotten so painful that everyday tasks were a burden. Any vigorous activity came with a steep price of severe aches and pain. I have been working with Kevin and Patti (Massage Therapist) at AFFL for five months and with their help, I have regained control of my life. I am able to fit the 30-minute workout sessions into my one hour lunch break, so the combination of convenience and tangible results has been tremendous. I am stronger, have better balance, have significantly less pain and I am smiling again as I am participating in the outdoor activities that I enjoy. I can’t wait to see what we can do in the next five months!! Thank you.

Before I started reconditioning my spine at AFFL, I could barely make it through a round of golf without serious back pain. Those days are gone! I recently played 90 holes of golf over a long weekend and even played a set of tennis after Saturday’s round with no back problems. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that using the MedX Core Spinal Fitness System at Appleton Fitness For Life, Inc. has helped me immensely. Thanks!!

The slow-speed workout program has done wonders for me. Not only do I feel stronger than I ever have in my life, the program was instrumental in my 17-pound weight loss. I have more energy and my performance and endurance in athletics has been greatly enhanced. The best part of this program is that after a few weeks, the frequency of workouts is down to only once a week. Kevin’s training style is one that is very encouraging. He also pushes you to do your best and reach your full potential allowing your body to get the most out of every training session. The results are well worth the investment.

I have MS and hurt my back two years ago, since then; I have been in a lot of pain and have muscle spasms. I wish I had known about AFFL earlier. I have become so much stronger in the few months that I have been working out with Kevin at AFFL, and the pain and muscle spasms are not even half of what they had been. I had been looking for some sort of program that I could work with because of my limitations. Nothing else was helping, physical therapy was much help nor was the medication that I was taking. Kevin puts care and compassion into the exercises as well as his knowledge. I am so happy that I found AFFL; I only wish that I had found it sooner!!

Five months ago, I set out to achieve a goal: to find a strength trainer and a facility that could help me preserve my overall strength and maintain good bone health. After a lot of research, I decided to give AFFL and Kevin’s slow speed training method a try. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. In five short months, I have become a much stronger person physically. Being stronger and having more stamina translates into a higher quality of daily living. Vacuuming, lawn work, taking a flight of stairs, all of these things has become an easy part of my daily living. I have gained two other valuable things in the last five months: knowledge and confidence. Kevin is an incredible resource on all things health and nutrition related. He will explain every aspect of your training in a very understandable way. I have also gained confidence in the fact that I can increase my strength further, as well as maintain a great deal of strength as I get older. It is empowering to know that I can preserve a good quality of life in the future through strength training. AFFL provides strength training that is safe, with superior equipment and results that are measured at each session. Kevin’s integrity as a trainer and the integrity of his program are the backbone of AFFL, and the results I have achieved prove to me that this has been money well spent.

I began my program about three years ago and the intent was to see if I could work on some strength as well to lose some weight as well. I was not sure if I would be able to continue a regular program both from my work schedule as well as my true desire to do a long term program. I have surprised myself in that I have maintained my workouts because they do not stretch out over several hours-I am in, do my 30-minute workouts and I am on my way. The 30-minutes give me a very good workout that has helped me to begin achieving some of my goals. It has helped me to drop some weight, starting at 230 pounds and I am now at 210 pounds. The best part of all of this is I feel my body is firming up again and when I started I had my doubts. I have gone from a size 38 pants to a size 34 pants and most of all I feel much better. I should also mention that when I began this program at the age of 60, I was not sure if I was too far along to tone back up and I feel like I have begun to accomplish that. I still feel like I have more room for growth in toning and some weight reduction. The results to date have made me feel better and I look forward to continuing my program with Kevin’s help. The training equipment is state-of-the-art and the one-on-one training I have received from Kevin has been great. I have tried programs in the past in gym settings and I have not gone a full year in any because of the time it would take to get my training done. In this setting I know I have a Personal Trainer and I will move through each of my training stations without interruption. It also helps that Kevin is very knowledgeable and has been very supportive which make my sessions rewarding and enjoyable.

Not having participated in any structured physical activity since high school, I vowed when I turned 50 I’d start an exercise program. Having made the same promise at 51 and at 52, I decided that at age 53, it was probably time to start. For several months, I asked a lof of questions and did a lot of research on exercise equipment and trainers. I found Kevin McKee and AFFL, and knew that it was the perfect place for me. I began both quick and effective personal training. AFFL has the latest top-notch equipment which has made my lower back stronger than it has been in years. When I took a vacation in Spring, I wanted to continue my training. I found a Personal Trainer at the resort, but he didn’t even come close to the quality and care Kevin provides. I was glad to come back home and start training at AFFL again. I am able to fit exercise around my schedule. I’ve noticed greater flexibility and have more energy. AFFL has shown me that it is never too late to begin a healthy life-style change.

Kevin McKee is a trainer to trust. I started lifting with Kevin as my trainer several years ago due to chronic back pain. Kevin put me at ease right from the start with his clear instructions and patience. His commanding voice gave me confidence and incentive to increase my strength with each training session. Kevin has a thorough knowledge of the weight machines and designs a program for each individual and their specific needs. The slow-speed method he teaches, allows for short and few sessions. With only a little time commitment, I made great gains in strength. I now feel stronger and have little or no back pain. Being stronger has certainly saved me from more chiropractic visits plus I have the added benefit of the muscles I can see and use. Beyond this, I know Kevin keeps my best interests the priority. He provides feedback during and at the conclusion of each session. I am sometimes unaware of the intense workout I have had because he’s so enjoyable to talk with while training. He’s positive and inspiring when I most need to push myself. Any concerns I have are promptly addressed and adjustments are made. I am always treated with respect and have learned a lot about healthier living. Kevin is a caring and admirable coach and an even better person. I trust Kevin with my health and hope you will, too.

When I first started going to see Kevin, I was in sad shape. I had been ill so my muscle tone was poor. I knew I needed help, but going to a gym was the last thing I wanted to do. I never thought I would have a personal trainer, but after the initial embarrassment of exposing my frail body, it was O.K. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable, caring and shows great concern for the total well-being of his clients. I was sent to do some physical therapy where I would hurt for days. Kevin has never caused me pain. I don’t have any discomfort, just the good feeling of my muscles being used. Over the last six months, I’ve built noticeable muscle with Kevin’s regimen.

Our family has worked with Kevin as a personal trainer over the past six months. Kevin has always demonstrated a friendly and caring demeanor throughout his interactions both in and out of fitness sessions. From the start he developed an excellent level of rapport and provided a wealth of information and support. We have been impressed with Kevin’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and level of motivation in assisting his clients to achieve their goals. Fitness sessions are always organized, well thought out, and make efficient use of time. Emphasis placed on a balance of slow-speed weight training in combination with healthy eating habits. Kevin takes time to cater the workouts to the needs of his clients and has also shown a great sensitivity to the needs of special individuals. Perhaps the greatest impression Kevin has made on our family is with our handicapped 24-year-old son. Our son looks forward to his fitness sessions with Kevin due to the friendliness, the one to one attention, the caring attitude, and a high level of support and motivation. We are extremely happy with the overall results of Kevin’s efforts and appreciate his dedication to his clients.

“MedX medical exercise machines form the cornerstone of our physical therapy practice and have contributed greatly to our being recognized as a niche clinic specializing in aggressive spinal rehabilitation. Savvy patients who have experienced other forms of treatment immediately recognize and appreciate the sophistication of the equipment and the methodology. While much of spine care is an imprecise matter of pressing and guessing, MedX medical machines are the embodiment of evidence-based practice, allowing the quantification of objective indicators of spine function, which allows determination of patient goals and discharge criteria. Moreover, a considerable body of research has allowed the development of algorithms to achieve these goals with greatest efficiency. The overall impact of MedX technology on our practice is greater precision and confidence in the evaluation and treatment of chronic back and neck complaints.”

“Once the problem has been somewhat disabling after six weeks, scientific evidence does document that deconditioning occurs in the soft tissues of the neck and back. A rational approach to resolving the additional problem of progressive deconditioning superimposed upon the original injury certainly would be a guided progressive strengthening program to counteract the problems of deconditioning.”

It is even more helpful now as it helps to reduce back pain, strengthens my core, and keeps me flexible enough to remain competitive. All golfers want to hit the ball farther and The Core not only helps with that, but also will keep you healthy enough to enjoy golf into your later years.”

“As a practicing clinician utilizing the MedX equipment for the past 17 years, there has always been the thought that beyond medicinal uses, the equipment could be used for sports enhancement. For the past 12 years, we have assisted graduate and upper classmen students perform “research” using this equipment. We have proven that torso rotation can increase the club head speed in golfers. While we did not increase the speed of a pitched ball, to an athlete in the experimental group, they each felt they had more control on their pitches and had more stamina. We condition the women’s golf team of a local university and have elected to forego the traditional college strength program setting due to the gains they make in the clinical setting.”

“I have always suffered form a tight low back which has led to back pain the last few years. As an avid golfer, the last thing I wanted was back pain every time I played. Last summer I was in a car accident, which caused even more damage to my low back. The accident happened to be a blessing in disguise, as I finally made the commitment to improve/strengthen my back, which led me to the Core. Before the car accident I was taking golf lessons and the most frustrating part of the lessons were that I was physically unable to do the movements that my instructor was coaching me to do. Poor posture, little flexibility, and no endurance in my back lead me to give up on the lessons. After using the Core two times a week for three months, I decided to finish the lessons. My instructor could tell a tremendous difference after the first few swings. He was almost as pleased as I was because he now could teach me how to play golf without the physical obstacles of a bad back. In the first few rounds of golf since using the Core for 3 months, I increased my distance 20-30 yards and more importantly, I played two rounds in one day Pain Free. Before using the Core, I was averaging less than 240 yards on my drives, but last week I won a long drive contest with a drive of 292 yards.”

“I have lost over 180 pounds!”
Damon BeforeDamon After
I was on the verge of turning 30 years old and ready for a change. On a good day, I stood 5’11” and weighed 397 lbs. My doctor suggested gastric bypass surgery, but the thought of such a drastic surgery scared me to death plus my insurance would not cover the procedure. That is when I decided the only person that could change my life was me.
